A GLIMPSE INTO CREATING PICTURE BOOKS WITH CHRISTY
I LOVE to talk about picture books and art! Students will get to peek behind the curtain to get a glimpse at the way I work, see how a picture book goes from idea to publication, discuss where ideas come from, see original art, and more.
My debut picture book, Lucky, is full of opportunities to discuss science-related concepts like keystone species, ocean currents, watersheds, as well as SEL concepts such as community, friendship, and problem-solving. A great way for students and teachers alike to connect to the environment and art.
The Storytellers Rule is perfect for inspiring students to get creative. Students will learn how to create well-rounded characters, how to follow their interests and shape those interests into stories, and the potential in a really terrible first draft. Students will walk away knowing their stories are worth telling, too!
Millie Fleur's Poison Garden is my heart on the page! It's the book I wish I'd had as a child when I started to feel like I needed to fit in and hide my "weird." Students will enjoy learning about the real life poison garden that inspired this book and be encouraged to embrace everything that makes them wonderfully weird.
WHAT ABOUT OLDER STUDENTS?
I really enjoy workshops with older students! I can tailor any of my presentations or breakouts for older students – please ask me about it! Although my books are suited for younger audiences, I'm happy to speak to middle and high school students about the writing process and the business of children’s books, the publishing industry and breaking in, and making a living as a writer.
